Usangi – our sister community

 

Tanzania is to the size almost twice as big as Sweden and has an approximate population of 35 million. The country offers on most of Africa’s different nature types. This has in turn shaped the 120 different ethnicities way to live. Along the coast and on the island of Zanzibar is home for the trading people. The coffee farmers are to be found on the slopes of Kilimanjaro and the fishermen by the lake Victoria. On the steppes you can find the cattle-breeding massai people and maize-farmers on the south upland.

 Usangi consists of several villages and about 36 000 inhabitants. Our sister community is located on 2000 meters above the sea in the Pare mountains along the Kenyan border. Most people in Usangi maintain on cattle-breeding and farming. Maize, bananas and cassava are most common. The temperature in Usangi is about 20-22 degrees Celsius during the winter and about 25-28 during summer. The two rain-periods are in October-December and in Mars-May. The official languages are Swahili and English.
